Idea of the Day.......

As a paid beer writer, I get quite a bit of spam in my inbox regarding beer.  Much of it is simply wasted, as I don't need to tell my readers (blog or paper) about El Paso Beer Week or the latest beer made by West Coast Pirate Beer or Montana Moose Brewery.

But something interesting popped up from Ontario.

The Ontario Craft Brewers, a group representing 25 breweries in Ontario, is packaging a special six-pack tied in with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, featuring six "medal winners" from six different breweries.  This is apparently the fourth such special six-pack they have assembled.  The six-pack includes recipes picked to go with the beers included.  Heck, the website's brilliant, too.

Now, if you ask me, this is the kind of marketing that we should be seeing out of the Brewers Association of Maryland, or similar such guilds in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Michigan, etc.  What could be included in Maryland's?  Medal winners is too obvious.  How about winter seasonals, or hoppy beers, or one-offs like Brewers Alley's 1634 Ale?

PS:  First flurry spotted @ 11:06 am here near Druid Hill Park...........

This is an excellent idea. Maybe we could even convince the brewers to do a special Maryland Mixed Pack brew; the only way to get that brew is to buy the six pack.

There's something hacky about just selecting beers that have won an award. It's just so easy. I'd prefer themes or trends, similar to your proposals. Or maybe a six pack playing off of Natty Boh's old marketing slogan about Maryland stretching from the mountains to the ocean, something that represents the different regions. Grab a beer from Flying Dog (Raging Bitch, say) to fill your western Maryland quotient, one from Southern Maryland (Ruddy Duck would be the only qualifier, I guess), one from the Eastern Shore (Evolultion ESB, I guess), one from the state capital (even though Rams Head isn't really from Annapolis anymore, and isn't really from Maryland for that matter either), and then focus the rest of the six pack on Baltimore's beers... say, BatoMarzHon, Resurrection, and IronMan Pale Ale. I suppose you could replace either Rams Head or the Eastern Shore representative with a Wild Goose, for old time's sake.

I don't know. Needs work I guess.

Nice thought, Andrew, and I kind of like your way of thinking, except for one thing: Ruddy Duck doesn't bottle; I don't think Evolution bottles (and they're in Delaware, anyway, by about 1,000 feet); Resurrection is only in 750's; and Ironman Pale Ale isn't bottled any more..... Perhaps we just need more breweries bottling beer.... though come to think of it, we could assemble a four-pack of bigger bottles from DuClaw, Brewers Art, Flying Dog, and Dog Brewing......
